Enemies can take forever to respawn in areas you’ve already been in, but it’s a mechanic I’ve gotten behind. Melee combat feels just as stiff and non-dynamic as it did in the mid-1990s, which isn’t a good thing. But I’ve also noticed a few things that make me wonder if there’s something else to be fixed in the finished product. So I certainly enjoyed seeing familiar faces: unsightly mutants, Picard-as-Borg-like cyborg drones, trash-can-looking bots that extend their arms at you. All this to say: I am a fairly easy target. I backed Nightdive’s Kickstarter for the game back in 2016, when it was expected to arrive by late 2017. Playing it on my dad’s Gateway office computer was a big part of my computer education. Admittedly, in the midst of a humanity-threatening crisis, you can still spend far too much time carefully organizing your inventory and collecting scraps for junk credit.įor context and disclosure, I originally played Massive in the era when Looking Glass still existed. But the story beats, the puzzles and the enemies and traps, are still the very core of the innovative, quirky game. There are some new features, such as a completely revamped interface with better shortcuts for secondary items, such as grenades and stim patches. And, of course, you can play games on Steam, GOG, or Epic instead of finding an ancient CD-ROM. You can blast and pipe-bash enemies, but they’re not wolfenstein-era 2-d sprites now. You can punch 0451 into the medical storage locker like it’s 1994, but this time at a modern resolution and frame rate, using more comfortable controls, even a gamepad.
If you’ve played and liked the original, then this demo, and possibly the full game, is almost certainly worth your time. After spending a few hours in the first level, I’m definitely impressed but curious about some of the decisions and focus areas.
I’ve been looking forward to revisiting Citadel Station and its malevolent AI ever since the project was announced nearly seven years ago.
No one was expecting to see the pc demo system shock Remake this week, at least me.
